TIMING ADJUSTMENTS
THE CHROME TIMING COVER ABOVE HAS A RAISED UP WHITE LINE AT THE 2 O'CLOCK POSITION, LINE THAT UP WITH THE 32 DEGREE MARK ON THE BALANCER AT 3000 RPM'S WITH THE VACUUM LINE DISCONNECTED AT THE DISTRIBUTOR.
HERE ARE SOME ADDITIONAL NOTES; PEOPLE ASK US SHOULD THE VACUUM HOSE THAT GOES TO THE DISTRIBUTOR ADVANCE BE HOOKED UP ON THE DRIVERS SIDE OR THE PASSENGER SIDE OF CARB?? IN MOST CASES WE HOOK UP THE HOSE TO THE PORT ON THE DRIVERS SIDE OF THE CARB, THIS GIVES THE ADVANCE FULL VACUUM ON IDLE IT HELPS THE ENGINE RUN BETTER WHEN IT IS COLD AND GENERALLY HELPS WHEN ADJUSTING THE IDLE, THE DRIVERS SIDE PORT WAS USED ON ALL EARLY MUSCLE CAR ENGINES, THE PASSENGER SIDE VACUUM PORT WAS USED LATER FOR EMISSION ENGINES, THIS PORT ONLY GIVES THE DISTRIBUTOR VACUUM WHEN THE THROTTLE IS OPENED, AND YES IT DOES LOWER THE CO/HC EMISSIONS READINGS, BUT IT DOES NOT RUN AS WELL COLD.
AFTER SETTING TIMING, ROAD TEST THE VEHICLE, IT SHOULD ACCELERATE SMOOTHLY, YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE A GAS PING, IF YOU DO EXPERIENCE A PING THEN YOU MAY HAVE TO DROP THE TIMING BACK A FEW DEGREES. MANY OLD TIME MECHANICS WILL SET THE TIMING ON THE ROAD BY DOING WHAT IS COMMONLY CALLED POWER TIMING, THEY START OUT WITH THE DISTRIBUTOR SLIGHTLY LOOSE, JUST ENOUGH THAT IT CAN BE PULLED UP OR PUSHED BACK, THEY ACCELERATE THE CAR, AND THEY KEEPING ADVANCING THE TIMING UNTIL THEY DETECT A GAS PING AND THEN RETARD THE TIMING SLIGHTLY UNTIL THE PING GOES AWAY. OF COURSE BE SURE YOU HAVE THE PROPER OCTANE FUEL, AND THAT THE FUEL IS NOT OLD OR STALE.
IN MOST CASES WE SUGGEST THAT YOU DON’T MOVE THE DISTRIBUTOR TIMING BECAUSE IT HAS BEEN PROPERLY SET AT THE ENGINE FACTORY, BUT WE DO KNOW THAT IN THE REAL WORLD SOMETIMES THE DISTRIBUTOR MAY HAVE BEEN MOVED DURING THE INSTALLATION PROCESS, SO IN THAT CASE IT MUST BE PROPERLY SET.
